TOSHIBA e-Fuse Application Circuit RD241A-B

TOSHIBA PCB for eFuse with enhanced overcurrent protection

In the following post, we will present two reference designs from TOSHIBA for eFuse circuits. One design features Enhanced Overcurrent Protection, offering redundant overcurrent protection for extremely current-sensitive and critical circuits. The other design includes Thermal Shutdown, using PTCs for temperature monitoring.

Both eFuse module boards can be interfaced with a separate base board from TOSHIBA, equipped with N-ch power MOSFETs, gate driver ICs, signal-control transistors, and CMOS logic ICs. The base board design files are also provided within PDF files for a complete implementation example in real-world application circuits.

These designs leverage the eFuse IC, which provides rapid overcurrent protection, reusable functionality, and features such as overvoltage protection.

In recent years, protective functions have become increasingly important in consumer devices such as notebooks, game consoles, storage devices, and servers. These designs are ideal for such applications, utilizing both the eFuse IC and Thermoflagger™ IC for optimal protection.

e-fuse with with Thermal Shutdown

This reference design offers a detailed guide, data, and components for an eFuse IC Application Circuit (with Thermal Shutdown), built on a compact board. It provides over-temperature detection and overcurrent protection by integrating the eFuse IC and the Thermoflagger™ (Over Temperature Detection IC).

Features

  • Simple over-temperature detection solution alongside eFuse IC protection functions
  • Compatible with multiple PTC thermistors
  • Compact 2 x 2cm design

Specifications

  • Input Voltage: DC 2.7V to 6V
  • Rated Output Current: 1.1A (typical), adjustable up to 4A with resistor settings

Key Components:

  • eFuse IC (TCKE905ANA): The main component responsible for protecting the circuit by cutting off the current in case of overcurrent or overvoltage events. Unlike traditional fuses, this eFuse can be reset and reused.
  • Thermoflagger™ IC (TCTH021BE): A temperature detection IC that works with PTC thermistors to detect abnormal heat in the circuit. It sends a signal to the eFuse IC to cut off the current when overheating is detected.

e-fuse with Enhanced Overcurrent Protection

This reference design provides a guide for the eFuse IC Application Circuit (with Enhanced Overcurrent Protection), built on a compact 2 x 2 cm board. The circuit ensures precise overcurrent shutdown by combining both an eFuse IC and Thermoflagger™ IC for overcurrent protection.

Features:

  • Precise overcurrent shutdown solution
  • Compact design on a 2 x 2 cm board
  • Various built-in protection functions of eFuse IC

Specifications:

  • Input Power Supply Voltage: DC 2.7V to 6V
  • Rated Output Current: 1.4A (Typ.), up to 4A with appropriate resistor setting

Key Components:

  • eFuse IC (TCKE905ANA): Provides fast current interruption compared to conventional fuses, with built-in protection functions like overvoltage protection.
  • Thermoflagger™ IC (TCTH021BE): In this design, Thermoflagger™ is used to monitor the current of the eFuse IC. When it detects overcurrent, it cuts off the output of the eFuse IC (redundancy). It also cuts off the output of the eFuse IC when the PTC thermistor integrated on PCB heats up and its resistance rises.
